I think it was changed because the world is changing. For one, PG-13 movies are getting worse and worse. And secondly, we have resources to help us in our entertainment choices that we didn't have in the past. The principle pertaining to media and entertainment is that we need to avoid immoral, vulgar, inappropriate and suggestive material. The principle is NOT "don't watch R rated movies". However, MOST R rated movies contain inappropriate material so a person would do well to avoid them. But I don't think it needs to be a matter of what are often arbitrary ratings attached to movies by people with completely different standards and values as us. We shouldn't let Hollywood dictate our conscience. There are great websites available that tell you exactly what's in a movie. Kidsinmind.com is one, it gives three different ratings for language, violence, and sexual content (scale of 1-10 for each). I think it's silly to rely on the ratings assessed by other people to make our movie choices when there are resources which allow us to use our own judgement. We can decide for ourselves what is "virtuous, lovely, and of good report" We don't need the MPAA to decide that for us.

I didn't realize that the For Strength of Youth had changed, I rememebr it used to say not to watch R-rated movies. I think it's good that they changed it because there are a lot of pg-13 or even pg movies that are not wholesome. -suzy

No, I don't think that any rated R movie is okay to watch. I know that some people take the lack of explicit instruction regarding this topic as a green light to watch some rated R movies but I don't believe this was the intent of the church or the first presidency at all. In my opinion, all rated R movies should not be watched, and sadly with what our world is coming to, a lot of PG-13 movies are falling into the same category. We need to be careful to not fall into Satan's trap of needing to be directed in all things. We know what's right, let's stop the justification.

BTW, thank you for quoting that section of 'For the Strength of Youth' pamphlet. It has helped my family decide what we do when it comes to entertainment. And, guess what? There are some G movies that we feel are a waste of our time. Fortunately, there are other ways to spend your time than at the movies! :)

My opinion? NO. If a movie is rated R, there is generally a reason. For my family, we have to draw the line somewhere. We draw it at R movies. If you have kids, you will learn very quickly that you do not want to fight every battle every day. By setting certain family standards in advance, a lot of arguing can be avoided.
